The Last Half Of Darkness
Some post halloween spookiness for you in The Last Half Of Darkness, an eerie point'n'click adventure. I think the supposed spooky atmosphere would be boosted a bit by the addition of some sound, unless it's just not working on the PC I'm at, which is perfectly possible, although I'm guessing to get sound you have to buy the full version which gets advertised alongside this freebie on-line version. I won't be rushing out to buy it I'm afraid. Well, actually, I'm not afraid, more to the point [via nordinho].

Pretty easy... you kinda knew a horror based game would go for a cheap scare at the end though...

That was a little disappointing... I was held up by trying to find clues... silly me.

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
The flower is in the coffin...

And the end... the scariest part was when they asked for my money to buy the full version.

Was there any reason for the bedroom monster vision?

lol, i LOVE "there are the remains of an unknown fellow in the hall."

and "there is nothing interesting about that..." when i'm looking at someone's chopped-off hand.

Tafkam

:
okay, i PICKED UP the key, now it tells me "The door is locked! A key might be necessary. [no!] I think you overlooked something on the entrance hall table."

so how do i "1. Select a command.... MOVE, EXAMINE, OPERATE or TAKE
2. Then... click on an object or doorway on main view screen", as the instructions tell me to? i don't have any commands...

-- oh, click on the object in inventory. so much for commands.

The cheap scare did not scare. The game was not one bit scary. It was too quick. The only thing I liked is you can't use the tab cheat.

Comment 25, Tuesday, November 1st 2005 06:46:00 PM

Tafkam

:
all right, what's this about the attic? i didn't GO to an attic. was i supposed to? or is this actually as completely illogical and inane as it appears, and they're just throwing an attic in at the end to give themselves an opportunity to scare people?

i mean, i didn't check the refrigerator either -- maybe i should go back and look more carefully, there might have been some out-dated milk, or two-day-old pizza, or someone's whispering decapitated head muttering about being out of ice cubes...

Tafkam, there was an attic...(it's the screenshot Graeme used above actually). There is only a

treasure chest there, which you open with the key. I think you got the doll from there

As for the game, pretty much the same as everyone else. Looked great, but very predictable. I think my money will be staying in my pocket ;o)
BTW, I wouldn't have expected the scare at the end, if Ash hadn't mentioned it ><

Singinbabe, there's a walkthrough in the game. (in fact, it sounds a lot like the one you posted, lol.)

Think~Pink, i did go back and find the attic -- you have to click on the right place on the stairs, or it won't let you go upstairs. i just wanted to complain. ("everyone else was doing it!" "and if everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you do THAT too?" "sure, there'd be a nice soft pile at the bottom.")

but you can complete the entire game with no problem without bothering to go upstairs. in fact,
SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
it's better, because you get exposed to less of that "poetry," which was the scariest thing about this game (at least until
SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
it gets to where they offer to take your money, as BitterQ says).

Comment 36, Wednesday, November 2nd 2005 12:35:00 AM

Think~Pink

:
...a nice soft pile, but a bit of a mess!

I stumbled across the attic by accident, before it told me to go back there. I wasn't even clicking there, well at least I think I wasn't, but then, there I was..on the attic stairs.

Comment 37, Wednesday, November 2nd 2005 12:44:00 AM

Tafkam

:
lol, in retrospect that was the best part of the game, before i figured out that you have to click... and... then... wait... patiently... until it tells you "there's nothing interesting here," or even longer if it's opening a new scene.

like at the end i realized that i'd gone from the front porch to the upstairs bathroom and the bureau with the hand in it, without ever seeing the front hall or the upstairs hall or any of the rooms, because i clicked repeatedly. much more unsettling (and fun!)

so maybe that's why at the end it seemed to make perfect sense that i was being directed back to somewhere i'd never been. hell, anything beats having to read that poetry...

Comment 38, Wednesday, November 2nd 2005 01:26:00 AM

Think~Pink

:
lol..aww...I thought it was quite charming ><

I loved how it stated...'the fireplace looks really old'. I don't know why, but it made me giggle.

The scare at the end was so predictable in my eyes. I am used to getting stupid E-mails all day long with things that jump out though. Also, you couldn't click anywhere in the attic at the end.
P.S. The refriferator and the two-day old pizza----Classic

i loved how everything was "creepy" or "eerie," when it was just dusty. meanwhile, the drains are stopped up with rotting flesh, and your only response is to turn the water off.

it makes no sense to congratulate anyone on "escaping" this house, since they should be committed to an asylum for staying inside longer than 90 seconds in the first place. and once you're out the back way and chatting with demonic little girls in the woods, why climb back inside the tunnel that's the source of the ancient evil (if not of the various corpses and skeletons and remains of unknown fellows that "can't help you now").

oh, that's right, you're initially interested in someone crying for help. whom you never find, and apparently lose interest in immediately once you see the full moon shining through the windows...
