Quest In The Dark
Quest In The Dark is an absolutely lovely point'n'click game with only two small things stopping it being perfect. #1: As the 'talking' is in Japanese (I think) I can't understand it - but this doesn't seem to be too much of a problem. #2: It's just soooo cute that the game play is constantly interrupted by you having to pause and say "ahh how sweet", and people looking over your shoulder and saying how the way the little girl walks is "just too cute" [subbed by tia & eb].

Mostly you're moving around on the grid on the floor a square at a time, and in any particular place you have to be next to the thing and facing the right way for it to show as a clickable hand.

Kind of fun but getting monotonous since you can't tell quickly what's clickable in a room. Definitely nice to look at. Just not over and over again :)

Torqane

:
Well, you pick up all the stuff and it basically gives you a score. Since it doesn't do that until the end, I can't see where you can get a different score different ways, but then again I never was about the score...

Fun enough way to spend some time. Probably mostly computer-generated as far as item placement.

One hint:
SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
Don't forget to go back outside.

Have 2 spears, a roll of cellotape, a mirror, a keycard and a box of matches

bad thing is that they appear underneth the blue item circles and are hard to get to then, especially the cellotape

Forget about walkthroughs. Not only are objects in different places everytime you play, they are not even the SAME objects.... I had to learn that after I had every single thing when my computer crashed. Je suis pissé

wooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaah
The game just died on me!!!!
Thats supposed to be the ending? Showing me my score and the objects I collected (among others sushi?!), telling me something in Japanese, forcing me to click OK and then the screen just turns blue?! NOW je suis pissé

Comment 17, Friday, November 4th 2005 01:23:00 PM

Hmm now i see the point of this game...u try and collect as many items as u can then at the end u get the bomb and see how many points each item is, the higher the score the better. Well thats me finished

I don't even know what I'm supposed to do with the items I have. I know everyone has different ones, but still. I have matches and I lit the fireplace. I have two keys. One opened the gate in the front yard, the other opened a box in one of the rooms after that. There is another chest and I don't have a key for it.

In the main house, there's a part where there are these bars (like a jail) that I can't get past.

And what's the deal with the ghosts? What do you do with them?

Comment 24, Friday, November 4th 2005 05:43:00 PM

Blackwing

:
Never mind about the room with the bars, I found the secret room by pushing the armoire.

Ok, I have my whole inventory filled up but there is no sign of this bomb you guys are talking about. Where is it so I can get out of this damn mansion?

P.S. Pretty please?

okay, at first i thought this little girl was cold-blooded -- thre's that completely creepy rotund little man stalking back and forth in front of the deserted house, and she stumps right up to him with that cheesy grin plastered on the front of her face as if he were kindly old Mr. Milkman and has a little conversation with him, which i imagine as going about like "hi little girl, would you like some candy?" "go die, you repellent scumbag."
then she stumps her way through the house, taking over-turned chairs, ghosts, bloody knives as all in a day's work, la-ti-dah.
except that as you navigate her around, you lose respect for her powers of observation. "moronic" seems like the best word to describe her -- walks right into things that aren't even in her way. no wonder she's not freaked out by Mr. Leerful or the ghosts, they don't even register except as "i've walked into something else, i suppose i'll have to wait for more instructions."
and at that point, i could care less about whether i complete my little list of Items, or find "the bomb" (can't happen too soon), or anything else. as Torqane said, the less walking around endless rooms with nothing in them, the better.
wake me up if there's actually anything interesting going on, like there's a way to use the items (as opposed to opening up dialogue boxes about them and then closing them again, SO tedious) or getting into some new and hopefully more interesting room, or killing that fat pervert in the tuxedo and striped pants.

Is there a point to this game or is it like that other one Thief? I managed to use the matches and keys but that is it. I don't even know what some of the items were! A red glowing ball thing and a silver tube?

BitterQ

:
This game truly is pointless. I didn't even get to use any of the objects (outside of the gold key). Nevertheless, I was practicing my Japanese during the game, and effectively, the little pedophile out front tells you to go into the mansion to look for treasure. Whenever you pick something up, it says... can you guess?... that's right! "You got a XXX"

The ghosts don't say much interesting. The one in the storage room says "FCS is expensive to buy" (I think... I'm not too good at translations) and the ghost in the blue room says "Did you find the gold key?"

When you click on the clock, it says "An old clock. It seems to be broken. There is no place where it changes noticeably." (no clue... I know I've got something wrong... any help?)

Similarly, when you click on the machine in the lab: "This device of unknown function has stopped. Thus, it’s best not to touch it."

At the very end, in the grey box after the sore-sheet, it says: "Your search is over. Thank you for playing."

And that's it... shoot, I don't think it would have made a lot of sense even if you did speak Japanese... it's just a boring game with adorably cute graphics. I played it again, just to confirm... and yep... the items all moved to different places, and the game was still boring.

I couldn't even get it to let me use the matches on the fireplace... I'd click on the word "use" (Why they wrote CANCEL in English evades me) while standing next to the fire... and nothing happens.

That was utterly uninspiring.

I think everytime you load the game, you'll find different things, although i got some of the same things in the same places, like the cog for the clock, the fresh piece and stale piece of bread, the spear, the brown dog key and the bomb...i played as the boy and i got a pint of beer from the armour statue in the basement. when i played as the girl, i got a jewel. And the oven...on my first try it gave me matches, then subsequently i got a piece of steak...??? i don't get this game...and i heard that the ending sucked too...

Moo was on the right track (thank you!): if you visit the url from the tombstone you can play the real game. The link posted above is just the demo for the Shockwave Awards 2005!

I've played the game now, btw, and it's quite nice. So, thanks again, Moo!

i lit the fireplace with the matches...then i have to click yes or no...after i clicked a new window apears with squares...what's up with that. i think its the same amount of sqaures as the amount of items you can collect but i cant seem to place them inside the squares...gggrrr

i have all the items except 2...
HELP!!! IM STUCK!!!

Leta and Moo are correct. If you go to the Creators Website, you can play the full version.

I have just finished playing this version, and to be honest, it doesn't differ a great deal to the original.
The game is longer, there are more items to be found and a few different puzzles to solve, but apart from that, everything else is the same, including the aim of the game and the ending.
It's still not worth all the effort IMO.

BitterQ- your translations were quite accurate, really. Yeah, this game seems pretty dull- I speak and read Japanese and the messages/conversations the little girl has are just plain.... blah. Boring. Pointless. Barely understandable. (What child is ok with being inquired, "Have you found the gold coins yet?" with "Nope!") A million other adjectives come to mind, but none of them are complementary.
Cute graphics though.

how in the world do you end this game? i've collected everything, lit the fireplace, repaired the clock, placed the triangle, circle and square shaped slabs in their places, got the golden key and opened the gate in the yard, which led me to a little shed with a big mirror...and there's nothing to do there...???
