In Transit

No games today I'm afraid, I'm in transit to DC.

Update: Well I've been in the US for close on 24 hours now and I'm having the best of times: the sun is out, breakfast was huge, the beer last night went down well and everyone I've met has been great. The only downside so far was the 2 hour journey through immigration, the officer who took my details was a nice guy, but the fact remains that the US government now has my fingerprints and photo on record!

You're going to DC? That's kool. Alabama is much better, but hey, I like DC, too. Just make sure you:
1. Don't eat McDonalds(as stated above)
2. Don't go into those little T-shirt shops they have everywhere. Some aere funny, but most a rip-off.
3. Whatever the guy says, they AREN'T Oakleys.
4. try to look for some of the on-the-roof secret security people. It was fun doing that last time I went.
5. have fun!

Hi Graeme,
If you stop by NYC, just send a mail and the first rounds are on me (I guess you would have mentioned it if you were going to visit NY but just in case...).

Safe travels and God speed, Graeme! And I hope you have time to have a bit of fun while you're here.

As for the McDonalds comments, I eat there fairly often and I'm perfectly healthy! Um, as long as there's a defibrillator nearby.

Graeme,

Welcome to my neighborhood! DC isn't as bad as some make it to be. I actually live in Northern VA and this is a great time of year to visit our Nation's Capital. Hope you have a great trip!

Isn't D.C. IN Maryland? Because I used to live like 15 minutes away almost two years ago...Anyway, McDonald's isn't that bad, you just have to be careful how much of anything there you eat, and I'm sure Graeme already knows about this since I'm also pretty sure they have McDonald's there lol. Graeme, some really good advise...Don't get caught in the belt way! You'll lose precious sight seeing hours! It's almost like there's no end to the dreadful thing TT__TT

McDonald's.... uuuugh. Mommy, get the slimy chicken away. I don't want to have to look at it anymore.

Seriously, though, have a good trip. Personally, I can't stand DC. Traffic > Entertainment. So if you get bored, come to NY.

I hope the person who said taking the train is better was joking. It reminds me of my friend talking about those idiot train questions on tests. "If a train to Dublin left at 5:00, going 70 miles an hour." "Um. Dublin?" "Why? Where's Dublin?"
Comment 33, Friday, 19 May 2006 20:43:00

No D. C. is not "in Maryland." It is it's own separate "district," not part of any state. However, the land used for the city was contributed mostly by Maryland.

Interestingly, the people who live in D. C. proper don't get to vote for Congressmen. But they do pay taxes. Whatever happened to "No taxation without representation"? Go figure.

Hey Graeme. Have a nice flight! I was just in D.C. a couple of weeks ago. It's great, all the museums are national institutions which means it's FREE! One thing you MUST do while there is go to the National Zoo early in the morning. The pandas are there and you can skip the crowds by going before 8.00 or so. Near the Zoo, by the Omni Hotel, is the best diner you'll ever find. It's called Open City. Superb chai tea and the friendliest staff around!

Well, I don't mean to sound creepy or like a guidebook. Remember to have fun in our grand capitol!

su: DC liscence plates actually say "taxation without representation." lol.

Have fun Graeme, EAT MARYLAND STYLE CRABCAKES! They are delicious, and there is no comparison to anything you find in the UK, trust me I've looked. Enjoy the late hours of the bars as well, as 24-hour drinking in London is a myth; at least DC doesn't close till 3 am.

ooooooooh i live in DC!! well to be honest, it's actually maryland for me too, but i live about two blocks from the border. on top of what everyone else has said, i love the national cathedral (it has a stained glass window commemorating man going to the moon and a Darth Vader gargoyle on the outside!!) and the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception (it has a mosaic about creating life that includes bits of DNA in the image). they both look way too new to rival the European cathedrals and basilicas, but they're still very impressive to me and very interesting with those modern twists they've got.

Hi Graeme! Thanks for creating and maintaining such an outstanding site. I've enjoyed it for quite some time. I hope you enjoy your trip to the US. Lots of stuff to see in DC. There's also a new Air and Space Museum near the Dulles airport. If you're out that way, be sure to drop by JR's steakhouse for a very outstanding steak (http://www.jrsbeef.com) too. You'll want the aged, marinated one (my mouth is watering just thinking of it). As one guy said above, be real careful about crossing streets. Unlike England, we don't have reminders of traffic direction (saved my butt a couple times) painted on the road.

The term for a town or city that serves as a seat of government is spelled capital. The term for the building in which a legislative assembly meets is spelled capitol.
