Site NewsI've been having a few problems on the site recently, as you've probably seen, with LL bringing my web host's server to it's knees (too popular, and too many comments!). As a result I've had to introduce some temporary measures to keep LL, and the server, running. Hopefully I'll get some proper solutions in place soon that'll keep all of us, and the server, happy. In the meantime I apologise for the inconvenience.

For now "popular posts" has taken a temporary break from the left hand column, and unfortunately I've had to limit the comments to 100 per post (larger exisiting comment threads are still there - just hidden). Limiting comments has had the greatest impact and I'll be looking at getting this back up and running with full functionality soon.

The first step will be to reverse the timeline of comment posts so that, with the 100 limit still in place, the latest comments are shown first, older ones to the bottom of the page, you'll still be able to add comments, and just the older comments will be hidden. Which, thinking about it, makes sense as the comments get more relevent as time goes on (with the exception of spam), and I might have thought of doing this anyway. I'll then add paging so you can "page back" to see the full comment history and nothing will be hidden anymore. Phew! Quite a bit of work for me to squeeze in there.

Once that is in place I'll look at getting "Popular Posts" back in place, which I already have plans for: the list will refresh daily, rather than being up to the minute, but it'll still be a nice way of easily reaching popular older content.

Right, that's all for now. I'll keep you updated as things progress.

Maybe people could help with limiting posts by not posting "First", "Second....."...... :-)

Graeme, have you implemented some kind of spam filter?

It's just that, I have tried leaving a comment in the Izzy K thread and it won't let me post, due to this spam filter.

Thing is, I don't know what the criteria are so I can edit the post accordingly, and tbh, I don't consider what I was going to post any kind of spam.

Just curious as to what the criteria are.

Graeme,
While I also think that it makes sense to show the posts in the reverse order, we are going to run into a problem:

We are going to read the answers before the questions.
We are going to read the hints for the higher levels before reading the hints for the lower levels...

What I mean is that I liked the way it was because we were "accompanied" throughout the progression of the game with the comments... Now, the first one to show will be for a later step, which will be meaningless to the player at first and may spoil the game.

Just playing Devil's advocate here.

Jb, I think Graeme has mentioned that he intends to page the earlier posts, so making it, that we can still access them via a link.
If this is implemented, we can just go to the link directly, before reading the more recent posts :o)

:
When I click to a comments page it always jumps to the
bottom of the page anyway, and I have to scroll up to the
first comments,

maybe they should appear in a random order, creating a
"mini-game" of "match the answer to the question" :)

Graeme, why not just delete all the posts that waste space?
E.g., the comments claiming "First!" or "Second!" and so on.
Usually, the first half dozen comments have nothing to
contribute to the game, anyway.

You could also delete the posts that are repeats of themselves. EG: two people answer or ask the same question. It might take a little work at first, but later on you could get it to where you don't do as much work.

I've noticed about 50 repeated posts per 150 total posts.

ooh, Think~Pink is posting spam! right, civilisation has broken down completely. the only answer is Fiercer Filters!

Murtagh's idea is great -- no short posts. also, the words "first," "second," etc. should be blocked. also filter out 1337-sp34k, and posts by people with hideously ugly colours in their user-name, or references to narcissistic American musicians, or in-jokes that no-one gets. limit the number of posts by any one person. allow users to eliminate each other's posts if they don't like them, and block each other from the site, and change each other's user-names to rude words. walkthroughs without spoiler tags should be filtered out, and anyone asking for help when a walkthrough has just been posted, or commenting on a different game than the thread is about, or disagreeing with me, or complaining that they don't get the humour in the linked site, or that the game is too easy, or too hard, or has badly drawn graphics, or that the way to beat the game is to right-click "Play," or bringing up irrelevant topics like their cat or the weather or the discovery of the integral calculus, or complaining that Graeme should do this that or the other to "improve" his site, or wondering what ever happened to anything from before 2005, or bragging about their computer "skilz," or asking "ASL," or posting with someone else's name, or using emoticons or acronyms like "g2g" or "cul8r" or making spelling or grammar errors or complaining that a Japanese game shouldn't be in Japanese or making fun of people who post "first!" or starting flame wars or trying to get other people to start flame wars or enjoying flame wars or saying anything rude or being too colonial or prosaic or drug-addled or perky or cynical or misanthropic or dense.

finally, excessively prolix posts should definitely be

@ Tafkam: sorry, but that sentence in post #17 was too long for me to read and understand at the same time. Could you help me out and split it into, say, 5 or 10 posts for me?

On a more serious note: Graeme, I agree with Jb in # 12: I prefer to have a thread starting at post #1 rather than the latest added. You cannot always play in real time, so often you start when there are already 50 comments or so. Scrolling up in stead of down is terrible (I don't know if you ever tried doing that at Nitro59's site, as the comments are all in Durch, but it sort of spoils the fun; he of course he has to do it as that is the way his (free blogging) site is structured and he has no influence on this point).

If you have to do it to keep the site "on air" then of course do it, but if at all possible please keep it temporary...
Paging may be a solution, as Pink says, but even then please try and find a way to do it such that on each page the comments scroll down from old to new!

Ok I dont think that's the 'real' Tafkam there...but I may be wrong! (I didnt read it all)

Definately dont filter the words 'first' or 'second' out because we may need those words in hints/spoilers etc...
Are we still going to get an 'edit' function so we can edit our mistakes in our posts...or has that been discussed already?

Nonetheless GREAT job Graeme, thanks for all the hard work!

I agree with the posts staying in the correct order if it wouldnt be too much trouble. If you implement paging, I would think it could page either way. The only problem I forsee for poor Graeme would be ... where the heck would the post box be? (Could be the first think you see after the intro to the game??) I dont claim to be any kind of expert at the making of the sites, but sure do love playing them. And for that I must tell you, Graeme, I really appreciate all of your effort to keep it going! If there is any way I can help, I would be happy to lend my time.
