Site News : Games Ratings

As you may have seen by now I've added a basic ratings system for games (check the rating link at the bottom of each game) which is based on your votes. I've tried to keep it simple with voting on each game restricted to 3 choices: you just say whether you love it, hate it, or if you're somewhere inbetween. The game's rating is then based on a weighted calculation from all the votes cast.

I'm hoping this is useful and "works", it's been suggested to me quite a few times in the past, and I believe I have the mechanics of it working, however whichever way I figure it in my head the ultimate success of the feature is really down to how/if people use it. So I'd be very grateful if you'd get voting, especially where you feel particularly strongly about the brilliance, or lack thereof, of a game.

Eventually (soon I hope, if enough votes are collected) I'll use the votes cast as the basis for a top 10 games feature so we can see the "ultimate Lazylaces games collection", and to this end you may like to hunt back through the archives for your favourite, older, games and get voting on them, as well as the newly posted ones. Use the search facility (in the top right of every page) to find "your game", or use the comment thread on this post to suggest games for other Lazylacers to check-out and get voting on. In the meantime I have a few suggestions of my own that spring to mind:

Happy voting everyone :)

well, I might as well take the initiative here:

rating comment #23
on thread #2126
poster: "Think~Pink" (evidently not a real name)

Comment #23:
"Nice to know you thought of me, when you saw a tin of Salmon Tafkam lol
Graeme, please don't ever enable us to vote on each others comments. Tafkam would have a field day :P
BTW, that middle picture IS sooo cute :o) "

Rating:
This comment begins well, with a friendly aside to a fellow poster. We must note, however, the inconsistent punctuation, and use of an acronym ("lol") which is neither capitalised nor abbreviated with full stops. This careless approach to communication compromises the integrity of the comment, detracting from its ability to create a positive overall impression in the reader's mind.

Next, an appeal to the sysadmin. Full credit for correct spelling of "Graeme" (not an achievement to be taken lightly, especially for those users who are products of the British school system).

Unfortunately, the afore-mentioned appeal is poorly supported: the only justification for the proposal to have the sysadmin refrain from enabling voting on comments is an ad hominem argument directed at a single user (coincidentally, the same user addressed in ostensibly collegial terms in the first paragraph of the comment -- this contradiction creates a tension which is left unresolved, again detracting from the overall coherence of the comment). No argument is provided to support the claim that "Tafkam would have a field day," nor is there any reference to negative effects associated with said "field day" (beyond a typographic representation of someone with beady eyes holding their head sideways and sticking their tongue out of the side of their mouth -- the import of this representation remains unclear); finally, there is no acknowledgement of the fact that the actions of one user are scant justification for denying all users the opportunity to vote on each other's comments.

(In this context, I need only mention the vastly increased opportunities to post "frist!" in ratings of each other's comments. The rush to post "frist!" after Tafkam's multitudinous, not to say excessive, comments, as well as ratings such as "prolix!" and "narcissistic!", would provide LazyLaces users hours of productive fun.)

Finally, in what may be taken to be a post-script, Think~Pink comments on Graeme's picture representing a vote of "I'm somewhere in the middle," astutely pointing out that it really IS sooo cute. The appended sideways smiley face is remarkably apposite here.

The accuracy of this judgement, however, scarcely mitigates the fact that the judgement is in fact plagiarized, cribbed from a previous comment (#18, coincidentally by Tafkam again). To give Think~Pink the benefit of the doubt, we might consider that the capitalisation of "IS" could be taken to mean enthusiastic agreement, implying agreement with Tafkam's comment. However, the absence of appropriate citation, or alternatively some effort to paraphrase the comments referred to, leaves the charge of plagiarism extant.

In short, this comment is not the strongest effort from one of our most reliable visitors. We look for better efforts in the future, and encourage young Think to expand his or her efforts beyond the predictable. A brief refresher course in posting "frists" might not be inappropriate, to restore the native enthusiasm and unconventional humour which is typically Think's trademark.

In summary: tasteful, slightly floral, with a hearty bouquet and lingering undertones of cinnamon, chocolate, and plaid. Overall rating: 3/5

rating comment #36
on thread #2126
poster: "Think~Pink"

one (1) helpful hint, hackneyed "emoticon," lame excuse, two (2) cliches (one from Governor Schwarzenegger), and another emoticon (this one a non sequitur): rated PG, parental guidance suggested, for lack of imagination and inability to convey convincing sense of threat. no violence, no sex, no heads roll. Joe Bob Briggs says "check it out!"

Calvin, you are very welcome.

Tafkam; "His or her"??? Scoundrel!
Also, I'm not even going to mention the lack of capital letters in your paragraph...oops! (I always thought castigating people for their use of, (or lack of), grammar, to be extremely puerile and vulgar).

Graeme, see what you have started? I said it. I said, "Tafkam will have a field day", and here he is.
There will be no escape. There will be no respite.
I am now completely exposed and vunerable, in what was once a safe haven.
Tafkam, (I wish I had an edit button), strikes again!

When your threads are overrun with his post ratings, don't come crying to me, in fact, you have my permission to cull his posting ability. Oh how we would laugh! Oh, how much work Tafkam would get done in his real life, instead of berating me on here.
I suppose I should be flattered, that out of all the posters that visit here, he chooses me to torment, (they do say this is a sign of affection). Then again, Ilikeyoualot, has been absent for some time. I wonder...

Alas, I have so much more to write, but time will not allow me that pleasure, much to everyones relief no doubt.
I bid you goodnight, adieu and farewell.

Tafkam, me' ole' China, it's time I got some Bo Peep, stopped rabbitin' on, and scarpered.
As always you played a blinder and it's been a great crack.
So wotcha' ...knees up and tinkle on the ole' Joanna.

("pulling very gently on your pigtails" lol: having dipped them carefully into my inkwell, I am now enjoying the aleatory calligraphy that results.)

T~P, m'love, your enthusiasm has triumphed over your usually-rigourous compositional skills. e.g., your first semi-colon should be a colon -- ah, but there! I descend to contentious nit-picking, focusing on the style of your post rather than its substance. tut tut.

much more important, your conclusion "I am now completely exposed and vunerable, in what was once a safe haven" is decidedly NOT valid: neither you nor any other poster is, was, or could ever be truly considered "safe" from the red pen of the Puerile Vulgarian Grammarian! (ha HA!)

which only stands to reason: just as Ilikeyoualot (and others of his ilk, though none rise to his pre-eminence) express a perspective which cannot be gainsaid (as Montaigne put it, "It is impossible to refute a sneer"), posting anything anywhere inevitably exposes one to commentary, rebuttal, spoofing of one's username, and embarrassing accusations. (e.g., "silly schoolboy crush" lol -- Kaya, dear, HOW can I have a "silly schoolboy crush" when I'm not even sure of Think~Pink's gender? and for that matter, it's not even clear what gender *I* am. We Are Not Paramecium!)

-- that is, of course, one is so exposed UNLESS one has the benefits of moderator status, and (unlike our saintly Graeme) no compunctions about using them to re-write, distort, or impose arbitrary aesthetic judgments on a poor unsuspecting poster's comment.

to which the only logical remedy is an appeal to the collective aesthetic judgment of one's peers. in this case, Kaya, who thoughtfully implies that Think~Pink is over-reacting, and that ratings of comments are decidedly appropriate forms of banter for everyone on Lazylaces, and should indeed be taken as flattering, especially when the rating is made by someone who is neglecting important obligations IRL to contribute to raising the tone (and the style!) of commentary on this, our beloved LL.

I await the contributions of Ilikeyoualot to these ratings with Bated Breath!

overall rating of comment #39: impulsive, oppositional, with a briskly inflated context of dynamic tension and bracingly creative anarchy, contributing to a heightened sense of terroir. splendiferous! and SO refreshing.

(now, off to exploit my new-found familiarity with googling "rhyming slang" to compose posts about famous Britons like Ethan Hunt, and Ogden Nash, and Brad Pitt and Ravi Shankar and Daffy Duck and the Von Trappes. ta me old chinas! and don't forget Milk Cow's Calf Blues!)

I agree completely, I'll gladly join Meme's side in this fight. Tafkam is obviously a typical liberal hypocrite, blathering about feminism and wetting his pants just thinking about Hilary Clinton, but when a real woman gives him a taste of his own medicine he reverts to his true colors, abusive invective and braggadocio -- until a real AMERICAN stands up to him.
