Bow Street Runner
Bow Street Runner is a historical point'n'click murder mystery (note: crime scenes are not suitable for younger players!) set in Georgian London, with atmospheric sights and sounds, which make for an absorbing game, even if it is slightly linear and not too difficult. Even better this is just the first part of a promised series of games for us to get wrapped up in. My only hope is that the later episodes are not so buggy though, maybe it's just the size of the game causing issues (beware the long load times they're not kidding with the "broadband required warnings), or maybe it's my PC, but I had to restart this several times to get through it with load screens freezing and not letting me progress, etc [subbed by Franki, Crymoon, Anjie, anon, Tweetiti, jadee & Mystery].

It's a good game, I love the style of it, but the mini-games where you have to drag the mouse on a path are just way too sensitive. I'm running a really fast computer on a broadband connection and it still jumps trying to catch up. Other than that, I really love this game and am looking forward to the sequels. (Which hopefully don't have those mini-games...)

Would be a fun game if it weren't for the "follow the line quickly" portions. I gave up trying to save the poor hussy.

I have been trying to play this for 3 days, after it loads...all I get is a gray screen that looks like fog constantly flashing. Please tell me what I am missing?

I really want to play this.

Is anyone else having the same problem? I have tried it at work and at home. I get the same gray flashing screen both times.

Walkthrough... but really, do try to do it on your own first - this contains major spoilers.

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
It's not necessary to examine everything in each scene in order to get maximum esteem points; that said, the information is interesting, and you might just learn something. This walkthrough only discusses the steps needed to earn maximum esteem and finish the episode.

Scene 1: Rose Street
*Grab the receipt from the deceased man's pocket
*Grab the red hair from the deceased man's right hand (click on each finger once quickly, then click on the hair)
*Click on the trough, click on the rope in the middle, then click on the trough again. Slide the garbage around until you uncover the knife located in the upper-right corner.
*Speak with the harlot; all you need to ask her about is the knife and then speak sternly to her, until she directs you to the Black Bull.

Scene 2: The Black Bull
*Play a game of Slide Thrift (poster located on the post between the guy to the right of Ned and the seated harlot) and win.
*Speak with Doyle (man standing to the right wearing a dark coat and a hat) - ask him his name, then ask about the watch.
*Steal the watch from Doyle's pocket without him noticing (key: smoothness + accuracy)
*Pick up the scrap of paper he drops after stealing the watch

Scene 3: Soho
*Go to the desk; pick the lock on the center drawer (same rules apply as in the watch game)
*Grab the journal entry in the drawer
*Grab the water glass from the top of the desk; use it on the wall with the door
*When listening to the conversation, move the glass around so that the voices are as clear and loud as possible (turn your sound on for this step) for maximum esteem points. (And no, you can't stop the murder)
*Grab Doyle's hat from the floor

Scene 4: Harlot's bedroom
*Sew up Hester's wounds. The key here is practice, but yes, it is possible to save her (I managed to do it with 1:25 left on the clock, and I have a laptop without a mouse). Start with the bottom wound, and work your way up. Blot, don't wipe with the sponge. Speed and smoothness are much more important here than they were with the other two games - work quickly! Accuracy isn't as much of a worry.

Scene 5: Fielding's office
*Answer the questions correctly: Doyle, watch, hair, scrap, journal.

That's it - hope it helps!

What a pity such an atmospheric game is spoilt by a poor interface for some of the mini-games. Like Gordon, I "gave up trying to save the poor hussy". I just can't move my mouse quickly and smoothly enough to follow the complex path needed.

It's really not sensible to rely on speed with an internet connection: the voice and faces were often out of sync, so it was obvious that my broadband connection just wasn't up to scratch, even if my mouse skills had been. Which they aren't!

I wasn't always sure what was needed and there was no time to think. For example,
SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)
when I was listening at the door there was no clear indication that I should intervene. I realised I should have done afterwards when I lost the chance at reputation. I found that very unsatisfying.

It's a very classy-looking game. I hope when more of it comes out some of the irritating issues have been resolved.

You don't have to zip up the hussy to get through the game, but you do need a fast connection or it's annoying as hell.

Good game, but, needs to be more user-friendly.

Firefox worked well with cable LAN (still a bit glitchy in spots).

100 Mbps min. is recommended.

I played this game earlier and really liked it. Very nice graphics and atmosphere. Of course, like others have said, it's ruined by the mouse-sensitive mini-games; I managed the watch and lock-pick, but finally gave up on the hussy. Fortunately, they don't make the rest of the game unplayable. Made it to the end, but glitches in the evidence submission hosed me up. That was very disappointing. I'll still play the next installment.

Good game, but when I try to save the harlot, I click on her wound and it says success automatically, but I can't do anything else except wait for time to run out. When it does run out, it turns out I didn't really save her.

Besides that, and the bandwith issues, I liked this game - it was nice to be promoted at the end, but is there any way to "save" your progress, even in the middle of the game? Hope future installments aren't so buggy.

Thank you for the walkthrough MarySophia, it helped with the evidence (even with the switch) - I wish we could present items in combination as evidence, as they build on each other.

The game glitches/sync issues have nothing to do with your internet connections people!!! Have you not heard of cached data? There's a lot of stuff happening and it's not very well handled in flash. To appeal to the P n Cer's out there, it needs to be a smoother operation..

Speaking of which, managed to save the hussey but couldn't get the watch ... go figure!

The chance at gaining rep isn't by intervening. Rather, it's moving the glass to hear the conversation clearly instead of the normal muffled sounds

Just to clarify things. The Bow Street Runners were the Police of their time before it was invented by Sir Robert Peel-he called them Peelers or Bobbies-hence the expression "Bobby on the beat" They used to wear tall top hats that were reinforced so that they could stand on them and look over walls, fences etc.

Later the police helmet was invented to not only be strong and sturdy but to protect against all manner of attacks, but couldn't be stood on. The most famous and longest running police force in the world is the Flying Squad(or The Sweeney)-so called from the cockney rhyming slang-sweeney todd-flying squad although there is no evidence that anyone called Todd existed in London.

I also couldn't handle the "follow the lines" thing. They did that in the PC Version of the first Harry Potter and it was awful. My mouse sticks sometimes and I can't do those things. Ugh. Hopefully they aren't in the later episodes. Maybe if enough of us write to them, they will get the point.

Thank you MarySophia, for taking the free time out of your day to write a walkthrough for this game. Without it, I would have blundered through.

SPOILER: (click box to reveal/hide)

I realized you made a simple mistake at the end and that is okay, everyone makes mistakes. So I just switched the order of the evidence. THAT WASN'T TOO HARD TO DO, lol

I managed to save the hussy w/ a minute and 59 sec... I am using Firefox with a few applications up, cable internet... but yeah the game was pretty laggy. But I cannot wait for the next installment =)

Thanks for all your feedback on our Bow Street Runner game and for helping us dig out all the bugs in the BETA version. Your input has been invaluable and the enthusiasm that we’ve had has really buoyed the team who are currently knee-deep in building the other four episodes. Episode one should now be totally fixed and is fully launched today so give it another go… and since you guys have already had a practise you should get through to episode two with no problems. In this fixed up version your esteem will be carried over to the other episodes… so if you want to be reminded when they’re going live simply leave your email address on the form at the bottom of the game page.

That’s it for now… good luck with stitching up the harlot!
