SOS History
I'm all for breaking new ground in point'n'click games, there are only so many times that escaping a room can seem like a new and interesting challenge, but I'm not really sure how I feel about the objective of a game being to learn more Canadian history. That's exactly the goal SOS History sets us though. Odd [thanks tabby].

Clicked on the link, waited for the progress bar to fill, and then zip...nothing else happens after that.
Oh well, I guess it's no big deal :oP

Think, m'dear, is that some kind of slam on Canadian history? 300-odd years summed up as "no big deal"? or better yet, "nothing else happens"?

"well, let's see -- it was cold, and there was some maple syrup, and hockey -- that pretty much covers it, i guess."

i thought only Americans were that dismissive of the Great White North!

No, you see....the problem with Canada is this:

They had the opportunity to merge French cuisine, British culture, and American technology........

HOWEVER....

INSTEAD.....

They chose to merge French technology, British cuisine, and American culture!!

;)

I am a sucker for Anne of Green Gables though....so Canada is fine by me!

:)

For whatever reason, though, the game keeps making my comp freeze up. Odd.

Meme, please don't presume you know me or my views on world culture and history.
You took my comment far too literally.

ah, Think, i can return the compliment: you took MY comment far too literally. i was having fun deliberately misinterpreting your comment.

based, of course, on having read with admiration your posts on this site and Nordinho.com.

so no disrespect intended.

and Incog, isn't "American culture" sort of an oxymoron?

Comment 7, Sunday, April 10th 2005 05:18:00 PM

Exactly Meme....but no more so than 'British cuisine' or 'French technology'. :)

Though, to be fair....I believe the French have made advancements in technology since I first heard that particular joke. ;)

Sheesh.

:
exactly. i keep thinking that i need to use more (ugh) emoticons, because nobody realizes when i'm being ironic, which is most of the time...

but i just can't believe anyone would take me SERIOUSLY when i e.g. accuse Think~Pink of stereotyping Canadians based on the game not loading! who would be that short-sighted and judgmental?

besides Dr. Evil and his Squad of Redundant Posters, of course...

Comment 12, Sunday, April 10th 2005 05:33:00 PM

Meme

:
oops, i meant "exactly" for Think, not for Incog accusing Think of seeing her- (him? it?) self as a victim for reacting to being accused by me of stereotyping a culture which has been subjected to American chauvinist attitudes reflected in our inability to accord each other the benefit of the doubt when posts don't match our pre-conceived expectation of agreement and/or righteous disapproval but instead evoke an amused but tolerant appreciation of cultural and personal differences, including but not limited to an inability to interpret gender identities or senses of humor from limited posts and our subsequent experience of ourselves as uniquely disadvantaged or even as victims of our own technology. Tee hee.

How many words are in that sentence Meme? ;)

Made my brain hurt.

I think that we can all come to the understanding that it was a misunderstanding. Understood? ;)

For future reference.....

Never take me seriously. Almost everything I say is said with tongue firmly in cheek. ;)

Now, can we all kiss(not deeply....mind you) and make up?

;)

just to clarify more -- did anyone posting on this site actually PLAY this game?

i enjoyed the part where i could shut up that guy in the white robe by clicking on the next question after i'd read his statement but long before he was done earnestly announcing it -- but then it took SO LONG to get to 1702 (or whenever that was), and it looked like i was going to have to talk to everyone in sight, and i decided that the pursuit of knowledge is a wonderful thing but not what i had in mind right now. (sound familiar, Think?)

Confession time:

I was actually enjoying the game.....but it kept freezing up my comp in the cornfield. :(

I am pretty sure it is because of my video card...it has been being snarky of late. Once I replace I shall give it another shot.

besides (it suddenly occurs to me), how CAN one kiss "deeply" with "tongue firmly in cheek"?

I stopped playing right away at the first mission because I couldn't find my way around. Its worth it just to see that guy in the white robe...

If it's freezing up on you, try reinstalling Shockwave; that's what made it work for me.

Also, if you think the guy in the white robe is fun, wait 'till you talk to some of the people in the second mission. I'm not sure what they told the actors, but the stage directions appear to have involved overuse of the word "flail."

Meme

:
oh, those are ACTors! well, that explains a lot. i thought they were escaped lunatics. maybe the stage directions involved the advice "be very sincere"?

You need to show the photo to the hippie chick, the mayor, and the pavilion hostess, in that order IIRC. They'll eventually lead you to a new area and somebody who'll give you the necessary information for getting into the USSR pavilion.

Yes, the game was educational, but the producers managed to make it fun as well. Good graphics and interactions with characters. Worth the play, if you don't mind learning a bit as you go!

Whenever you're stuck, talk to everyone again. The "triggers" that will change the dialogue aren't always obvious.
