Many many many thanks to Optical Poptitude for posting this link to a list of all the Microsoft Product Codenames. This finally answers a question Marion got asked in an interview in April last year - What did IIS used to be called prior to its public release? Looking at this list it looks like the answer is "Gibraltar" since that is the codename for IIS 1.0 - phew only 11 months late. Bonus points for knowing IIS4.0 was K2 and IIS5.0 was Avalanche.

No listings for IIS2.0 or 3.0 but who gives a monkeys since they suck so badly. Respect though to the software house I visited last month that still hand IIS3.0 installed on their server. Needless to say nothing I wanted to install worked. But I was very impressed as this was the first - and hopefully last - IIS3.0 build I'd seen.

The web drops it's trousers and coughs. Hmmmm...I think I made that sound more interesting that it actually is. Latency figures for all the key providers are posted letting you keep tabs on Internet 'lag'.

Alcohol powered laptops ahead! The genius of powering a laptop with an alcohol based fuel cell - most techies are already alcohol fueled so this is the next logical step. Some techies of my acquaintence - mainly network engineers for some reason - could probably keep a whole server room going on their breath after one lunch-time session alone.

I'm only 25% geek according to this which seems reassuring in a way but in another suggests a fundemental flaw with the whole quiz.

The only real bit of Bluetooth kit that has impressed me so far was the in-car hands-free kit - sit in the car with your Bluetooth phone in your pocket and you can immeadiately use the hands-free kit. Neat. Anyway forget that now you can control Scaletric like cars using your Bluetooth phone and looking at this pic the most important advance seems to be no slots. I smell a killer-app, which is just as well as Andy and I decided in the pub the other night that Wi-Fi made Bluetooth obsolete (despite the fact that both seem to have their uses and Andy's rolling out Bluetooth laptop & phone combos to his roaming users at work - hey this was a pub conversation we can be illogical).

Separated at birth - Iraq and the Irish county of Monaghan. This is especially for my friend Runa living in Monaghan and now worriedly searching the skies for slightly lost looking allied aircraft.

Flash makes search engines fun at KartOO. It misses the raw power of El Goog but gains with cool little animated diagrams of how your search results link up. Cute.

As well as being a particulaly fine domain name (which immeadiately made check to see what was at for reasons understandable if you have a conversation with Oliver in my office) also offers a genius service. Dial their number from your mobile, point the phone in the direction of any loud music for 30 secs and they'll text you back the name of the track and the artist. Shazam! [via Island.Life]
